TECHNOLOGY:
Membrane-Based in-Gel Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification System (mgLAMP) for Rapid Quantification of SARS-CoV-2 Particles in Environmental Waters
AFFILIATION:
Caltech, Pasadena, California, United States
TECHNOLOGY SUMMARY
Area:
Detection technologies for identification of SARS-CoV-2 from environmental samples
Tech Brief: The mgLAMP delivers fast (<1 hour) and accurate nucleic acid-based quantification (<10 copies/L) of SARS-CoV-2 particles in environmental waters (1 mL). Through an innovative combination of nanoporous membrane and hydrogel, mgLAMP fully integrates enrichment, purification, RNA extraction, amplification, and AI-enabled result readout.

Value Proposition: The ASSURED mgLAMP device is easy to operate, portable, inexpensive, and extremely accurate. It enables local health and environmental agencies, wastewater treatment operators, and operators of congregate settings (e.g., schools, universities, retirement homes, prisons) to monitor surface water and wastewater for SARS-CoV-2 particles. The device can be used in standard wet laboratory settings – no fancy equipment required. The membrane-gel technology used in the mgLAMP process has been adapted to different viruses and bacteria such as MS 2 or Salmonella Typhi and E. Coli. for simultaneous detection and can be easily adapted to monitor Influenza virus.
