COL Dawson A. Plummer is a graduate of Tuskegee University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a commission into the United States Army as an Armor Officer. Following the Officers Basic Course, COL Plummer was assigned to the Buffalo Soldiers, 1-10 CAV, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas where he served as a Scout Platoon Leader from November 1994 to January 1997, Troop Executive Officer from March 1997 to July 1997, and interim Troop Commander from July 1997 to September 1997.
Upon completion of the Armor Officer Advanced Course and Combined Arms Staff Services School, COL Plummer was then assigned to Fort Knox, Kentucky where he took command of Fox Company 2-81 AR from May1998 to October 1999, Battalion S3 October to December 1999, and Brigade Assistant Operations Officer from December 1999 to May 2000. After earning a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, COL Plummer became a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the United States Military Academy from May 2002 to May 2005. After completion of Resident CGSC, Leavenworth KS, from May 2005 to May 2006, COL Plummer was selected to attend the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS), Leavenworth KS from May 2006-May 2007.
Yongsong, Korea served as the Deputy Chief of Plans G5, Eighth United States Army (EUSA) from June 2007 to Feb 2008 and was selected to be the interim Aide-de-Camp for the EUSA from February to April 2008.
Camp Hovey, Korea, served as the Squadron Executive officer for the 4th Squadron 7th Cavalry Regiment, 2ID, from May 2008 to May 2009.
Deployed to Iraq with the 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division as the Operations Officer for the 4th Battalion 6th Infantry Regiment from June 2009 to May 2010 in support of OIF 09-10 conducting combat operations in the Maysan Province from the forward operating base (FOB) Garryowen.
Redeployed to the 4th Brigade 1st Armored Division Commander and was assigned as the Brigade Executive Officer from October 2010 to August 2011 (Deployed to Iraq in Support of Operation New Dawn (OND), from July to August 2011) and then assumed Battalion Command of the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion (4th BSTB), 4/1 AD in Camp Taji, Iraq Taji Base Defense Operations (BDOC), and Garrison Operations.
COL Plummer successfully led a Battalion size tactical road march from the Baghdad province down to Kuwait with no loss of Soldiers or equipment. COL Plummer successfully redeployed the 4th BSTB in December 2011 back to Fort Bliss Texas and changed command in February 2012.
COL Plummer moved to Fort Benning Georgia and assumed command of 1-81 Armor Battalion from June 2012 to June 2014. COL Plummer was later selected to be the Branch Chief of the Capabilities and Design Directorate on Fort Benning from July 2014 to June 2015. COL Plummer attended the National War College on Fort Mc Nair in Washington DC from July 2015 to June 2016. COL Plummer served as the Chief, Technology Strategy Division - Joint Improvised-Threat Defeat Agency (JIDA) J8 from July 2016 to July 2017. Currently COL Plummer serves as the Deputy Chief of J8- Joint Improvised-Threat Defeat Agency (JIDA).
Military and civilian education: School of Advanced Military Studies earning a Masters in Military Arts and Science (MMAS), Resident Command and General Staff College (CGSC), Combined Arms Staff Services School (CAS3), Armor Officer Advanced Course, and Armor Officer Basic Course. Earned a Master’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.
Awards: The Bronze Star Medal (2 OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (2 OLC), Meritorious Unit Citation, the National Defense Ribbon, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Ribbon, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Overseas service ribbon, Airborne, Air Assault, and Ranger Tab.
COL Plummer is married to the former Michelle Tisch of Virginia, and they have four children Troy (son), Gabrielle (daughter), Dawson Jr (son); and Jaylin (daughter).
