The United States has no shortage of scientific breakthroughs in industrial biotechnology, but turning them into domestic production, competitive manufacturing, and viable industries remains a challenge. Structural barriers – from fragmented infrastructure and uncertain demand to financing gaps and global competition – continue to slow deployment. This opening session sets the frame for the day by asking a central question: what will it take to move from isolated successes to building critical mass in American bioindustrial capacity?
The bioeconomy is often discussed in terms of future promise. Yet many of the technologies needed to transform manufacturing, strengthen supply chains, and enhance national competitiveness already exist.
